Celebrating Innovation and Sustainability: The Downs National School Visits Mountlucas Wind Farm and Lough Boora Discovery Park

We were thrilled to welcome The Downs National School, Westmeath — the overall winner of the 2024/2025 Bord na Móna Recycling Primary Schools Upcycling Competition — on a very special educational and fun-filled day out at Mountlucas Wind Farm and Lough Boora Discovery Park.

A Day of Discovery at Mountlucas Wind Farm

The day began at Mountlucas Wind Farm, where the winning students had the chance to explore the importance of renewable energy up close. They were introduced to the fascinating history of the wind farm and learned how wind energy is helping Ireland reduce its carbon footprint and move toward a more sustainable future.

The highlight of their visit? Standing beneath one of Mountlucas’ towering wind turbines — a moment of awe and inspiration! They also had the opportunity to engage with the site’s interactive learning hub and experience its VR wind turbine simulator, bringing the science behind wind energy to life.

Nature, Art, and Ecology at Lough Boora Discovery Park

Following their energy adventure, the students travelled to Lough Boora Discovery Park, where the day continued with a blend of fun and education. After enjoying some well-deserved treats at the café, the group embarked on a guided nature and sculpture tour, exploring the park’s unique blend of biodiversity, land art, and heritage.

Led by A knowledgeable guide, the students walked through the sculpture park and field study areas, learning to identify native flora, examine local wildlife habitats, and understand the ecological restoration of the site.

Thank You to All Participants

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the students and schools who took part in this year’s competition. Your passion for upcycling and sustainable living is inspiring, and we hope to see even more creativity next year!
